Student parents are more likely to face a number of stressors that put them at greater risk for mental health issues compared to their non-parenting peers. In addition, student parents often report feelings of disconnection and isolation on their college campus. With a high risk of stress and lack of inclusion, it is significant for student parents to feel a sense of support and belonging to help them succeed in college. Having to balance the stress of school, childcare, employment, course work, internships, and family responsibilities can leave student parents with feelings of guilt, anxiety and depression. We provide individual and group counseling services to help student parents maintain good emotional and mental health in a supportive environment where they can engage with their peers who are also parenting while in college.
*Due to the COVID-19 pandemic our counseling and case management services are temporarily only being offered virtually online at this time. Please contact us to set up an appointment or for additional information.
Case management and resources are essential to student parent success in college to help them overcome obstacles and hardships that can present themselves while caring for family and working to earn their degree. Case managers are available to help student parents gain access to services and resources in the community. Student parents can make an appointment with a case manager to assess their needs and concerns while developing goals and action plans to help empower them to address current and on-going needs. We strive to help provide resources, information, and referrals to help student parents navigate through the difficult barriers in their life and gain access to support.
Student Parents Empowered is active in the Federal and State legislature and advocates on behalf of student parents living in Texas. We work with legislators, their staff and state agencies to identify policy issues that impact student parents in college. A college degree can help create a path to family economic security and children's success, and ensuring that student parents have access to affordable, safe, quality child care and other support services is key to this initiative. We are committed to promoting policies that help strengthen support for students with children.
